Does 12VHPWR Really Require a 35mm Bend Radius?

The "35mm" rule gets repeated as if it's written into the ATX 3.0 specification. It isn't. Here's what the spec text actually says about bending (nothing), where 35mm actually comes from, and a detail almost nobody mentions that matters more than the distance number: which direction you bend.

Think about opening a laptop lid versus twisting that same lid sideways. The hinge can open and close thousands of times in the direction it's built for without complaint. A modest sideways twist, on the other hand, can crack it on the first try. Same part, same connector — the direction of the force is what decides whether it holds or fails.

How to route the cable, even without a spec requirement

  1. Keep any tight bend vertical, not lateral. If the cable has to bend sharply near the connector, route it so the bend goes up or down relative to the connector's flat face, not left or right.
  2. Avoid twisting the cable sideways when tucking it away. Routing behind a case's cable-management bar or through a tight cutout, watch for a sideways twist right at the connector body — that's the motion that stresses across all 12 pins at once, not just one or two.
  3. Leave general installation clearance above the card. Roughly the 1.4in (about 36mm) NVIDIA suggests keeps the cable from being forced into a hard bend right at the connector in the first place.

Myth vs. what the spec actually says

The claim: "12VHPWR needs 35mm of clearance before any bend, by spec"

Not supported. Zero hits for "bend" or "radius" anywhere in the ATX 3.0 specification text. 35mm is CableMod's own testing-based recommendation.

What actually matters: bend direction, not distance
